Why is in news? India needs to become quality-conscious nation & adopt quality as an integral part to be developed nation by 2047: Piyush Goyal

Union Commerce and Industry Ministry, has said, to become a global manufacturing power, India will have to both- expand its manufacturing ecosystem and implement high-quality standards for goods and services that it offers, while addressing the inaugural session of the Bureau of Indian Standards Seminar on emerging global trends in laboratories of Atmanirbhar Bharat in New Delhi.

The ministry stressed that India needs to become a quality-conscious nation and adopt quality as an integral part of the process in preparing the foundation for becoming a developed nation by 2047.

The Ministry urged BIS to undertake a comprehensive study of world standards and highlight focus areas for India to adopt.

Bureau of Indian Standards:

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the National Standards Body of India under Department of Consumer affairs, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution

It is established by the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.

The Minister in charge of the Ministry or Department having administrative control of the BIS is the ex-officio President of the BIS.

BIS is for the harmonious development of the activities of standardization, marking and quality certification of goods.

BIS has been providing traceability and tangibility benefits to the national economy in a number of ways by: Providing safe reliable quality goods, Minimizing health hazards to consumers, Promoting exports and imports substitute, Control over proliferation of varieties etc, through standardization, certification and testing.
