The Three Hoysala temples at Belur, Halebid, and Somanathapur in Karnataka were declared as UNESCO World Heritage Sites on Monday.

Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas:

1The Chennakeshava temple at Belur

2Hoysaleshwara temple at Halebidu

3Keshava temple at Somanathapur

Features of Hoysala Temples:

Period : 12th and 13th century

The Chennakeshava temple at Belur : king Vishnuvardhana in 1117 CE

Hoysaleshwara temple at Halebidu : 1121 CE

Keshava temple at Somanathapur: 1268 CE .

Commissioned by Somanatha Dandanayaka during the regime of Narasimha III.

Built on raised platforms

Construction Material : Soapstone / Choloritic schist.

Temples have horizontal friezes

Many of the sculptures are signed by artists

Intricate/Ornate carvings
