1Tamil Nadu Government Reconstitutes SC/ST Vigilance and Monitoring Committee

Tamil Nadu government reconstituted the State Vigilance and Monitoring Committee for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST)

The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu will serve as the Chairman of the committee

A total of 59 individuals, including all SC/ST elected representatives to Parliament and the State Assembly, have been inducted as members

Ministers in charge of Home, Finance and Social Justice Departments, the Chief Secretary, the Home Secretary, the Director General of Police (DGP), and two representatives from the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes are automatic members

Since Minister Vijay holds the Home portfolio, Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson and Social Justice Minister Vanni Arasu have been included as members

Seven other Ministers, one Rajya Sabha member, and seven Lok Sabha MPs, all belonging to the SC community, have been included as members

37 MLAs (Members of Legislative Assembly) belonging to SC/ST communities have also been included as members

2Aswath S Becomes India’s 98th Chess Grandmaster at Pune International GM

In July 2026, 17-year-old Aswath S from Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu (TN), became India’s 98th Grandmaster (GM) after securing his third and final GM norm by finishing runner-up with 7 points from nine rounds at the Pune International Grandmaster Round Robin Tournament in Mundhwa, Pune, Maharashtra.

He sealed the historic achievement with a must-win final-round victory over United States of America (USA)’s International Chess Federation (FIDE) Master (FM) Kannan Vaidyanathan with black pieces to secure the norm.

Aswath secured his first GM norm by winning the Grenke Open A in Germany with 8/9 points in April 2025, earned his second by winning the First Saturday GM Round Robin in Budapest with 7/9 points in December 2025 while crossing the 2500 FIDE rating mark, and completed his third and final norm by finishing runner-up with 7/9 points in Pune.

Aswath received the runner-up trophy with a cash prize of Rs.75,000, is set to compete at the Serbia Open with a target of crossing the 2600 FIDE rating mark, and his achievement further strengthens India’s growing presence in global chess.

3Novo Nordisk Launches World’s First Weekly Diabetes Insulin

Novo Nordisk has launched Awiqli (insulin icodec), the world's first once-weekly basal insulin for adults with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

The therapy—which was also granted US FDA approval earlier in 2026—cuts the annual injection burden from 365 daily shots down to just 52

The drug binds to a blood protein called albumin, which enables it to slowly and consistently release background insulin over a full 7 days

It is designed to replace daily basal insulin. Patients with Type 1 diabetes will still require short-acting mealtime insulin, while Type 2 patients may use it standalone or with other diabetes medications.

Pricing & Availability: In India, it is distributed in two FlexTouch pen variants. A 1 ml (700-unit) pen is priced at ₹2,611, and a 3 ml (2,100-unit) pen costs ₹7,883.

This translates to roughly ₹261 per week for a patient on a 70-unit weekly regimen.

4Telangana to Host 8th Khelo India Youth Games 2026

Telangana will host the 8th Khelo India Youth Games 2026.

Announcement was made by Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya.

Games promote grassroots sports development.

Event is organised under the Khelo India Programme.

Maharashtra, Haryana and Rajasthan finished No. 1, 2 and 3 in Khelo India Youth Games in 2025.

Hosts Bihar finished 15th while Telangana were 13th on the medal standings. In KIYG 2024, hosts Tamil Nadu finished No. 2 behind Maharashtra while Telangana were in 6th position.

The Bihar edition saw 28 sports. Medals were given away in 27 sports while e-sports were introduced as a demonstration event.

Twenty-six records were created in KIYG 2025, of which 13 were national youth records, all in weightlifting. The rest were meet records and all in athletics.

5Tamil Nadu Tops India in Higher Education GER

GER reached 52.3% in 2023–24.

National average GER is 30%.

GER increased from 49.1% in 2022–23.

Female GER stood at 53.1%.

Male GER was 51.6%.

Female GER exceeded male GER for the third consecutive year.

Around 35.8 lakh students were enrolled in higher education.

The state has 2,18,656 higher education faculty members.

Tamil Nadu accounts for 12.6% of India’s teaching workforce.

Key Fact: Tamil Nadu recorded the highest Higher Education GER (52.3%) in India.
