1. India Today Celebrates National Technology Day- May 11

Every year on May 11, India celebrates National Technology Day to honor the country’s scientific breakthroughs and the innovators who drive them.

The theme of National Technology Day 2026 is “Responsible Innovation for Inclusive Growth

The day was officially declared by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1999 to commemorate the historic Pokhran-II nuclear tests (Operation Shakti) conducted in 1998.

This achievement not only established India as a nuclear-capable nation but also signaled its refusal to be constrained by international technological barriers.

Today, the day serves as a platform to honor the contributions of scientists, researchers, and innovators.

Pokhran-I (1974): Led by Dr. Raja Ramanna under Indira Gandhi, this "peaceful nuclear explosion" was dubbed "Smiling Buddha".

Pokhran-II (1998): Conducted under PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, this series of five tests (Operation Shakti) included fission and fusion devices, solidifying India's nuclear weapon status

2. The Three Jan Suraksha Schemes Have Completed 11 years of Implementation

Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) and Atal Pension Yojana (APY) — have completed 11 years of implementation.

It were launched on 9 May 2015to provide affordable insurance and pension security to citizens, especially the underserved and vulnerable sections of society.

The three flagship schemes are PMJJBY (life insurance), PMSBY (accident insurance), and APY (pension scheme), aimed at strengthening financial inclusion, social security, and long-term financial resilience.

Key Highlights :

1. Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY)

PMJJBY provides life insurance cover for death due to any cause at a premium of less than ₹2 per day, ensuring affordable protection.

Benefit: ₹2 lakh insurance payout is provided with a 30-dayperiod after enrolment.

It is a one-year renewable insurance scheme implemented through LIC and other insurance companies, linked with banks and post offices.

Eligibility: account holders aged 18–50 years

Annual premium is ₹436, deducted via auto-debit,

2. Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY)

PMSBY provides accident insurance coverage at a very low premium to ensure financial protection against accidental death and disability.

It focuses on strengthening social security for economically weaker sections through affordable coverage.

The scheme has achieved 58 crore+ enrolments, making it one of the world’s largest accident insurance schemes.

Claims worth around ₹3,660 crore have been settled for 1.84 lakh families, ensuring financial relief during emergencies.

3. Atal Pension Yojana (APY)

APY aims to build a universal pension system for workers in the unorganised sector, especially the poor and underprivileged.

It is administered by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) under the National Pension System (NPS)

Eligibility: 18–40 years bank account holders who are non-income tax payers.

Provides a guaranteed monthly pension of ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 after age 60, based on contributions.

Ensures financial security for spouse and nominee, with pension continuation or corpus return in case of death.

Contributions can be made on a monthly, quarterly, or half-yearly basis, with provisions for voluntary exit under conditions.

3. Oath Taken by 17th Tamilnadu Legislative Assembly MLA's

On May 11, 2026, newly elected members of the 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly took their oath of office

The oath was administered by Pro-tem Speaker M.V. Karuppaiah

MPs and MLAs take an oath of allegiance to the Constitution as mandated by the Third Schedule of the Indian Constitution, overseen by the President (for MPs) or Governor (for MLAs).

MPs Oath (Parliament): Article 99 states that every member of either House of Parliament must subscribe to an oath/affirmation before the President.

MLAs Oath (State Assembly): Article 173 requires state legislators to make a similar oath before the Governor.

Ministers Oath (Center & State): Articles 75(4) and 164(3) require Ministers to take oaths of office and secrecy, along with the oath of allegiance.

Third Schedule: Contains the forms of oath/affirmation for both members and ministers.

16th Constitutional Amendment (1963): Added the requirement to uphold the "sovereignty and integrity of India" to the oath

Penalty: Under Article 104, if a person sits or votes without taking the oath, they face a penalty of ₹500 per day.

The President’s oath is governed by Article 60, the Vice President’s by Article 69, and the Governor’s by Article 159

4. M.V. Karuppaiah was sworn in as the Pro-tem Speaker of the 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly

Speaker Protem is appointed by the President under Article 95(1) of the Constitution to perform the duties of the Speaker till the election of the Speaker.

The Governor appoints a Pro-tem Speaker for the State Legislative Assembly under Article 180(1) of the Indian Constitution.

Pro-tem is a Latin phrase which means “for the time being”.

The pro-tem speaker is appointed to preside over the sittings of the newly elected house. Usually, the senior most member of the house is made the pro-tem speaker.

When the new Speaker is elected by the House, the office of the Speaker Pro Tem ceases to exist.

Duties of pro tem speaker:

The Pro-tem Speaker presides over the first sitting of the Lok Sabha /Leg assembly and administers the oath of office to the newly elected MPs/MLAs.

To conduct the vote for the speaker and deputy speaker.

He also administers the floor test.

5. India’s First Operational PM MITRA Park in Warangal, Telangana

PM MITRA Park at Warangal, Telangana today marking a historic milestone in India’s industrial and textile growth journey.

Developed at 1695.54 Cr, it is the country’s first functional PM MITRA Park and operationalises the Government of India’s 5F vision - Farm to Fibre to Factory to Fashion to Foreign

The Ministry of Textiles, Government of India approved the establishment of seven PM MITRA parks

States of Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh in March 2023 to give a fillip to a national eco-system for textile infrastructure in the country

The PM MITRA Park scheme not only brings central government funding in the form of VGF but also improves investor confidence, modern shared infrastructure, and integration into India’s national textile strateg.
