3Jharkhand Observes Hul Diwas, Pays Tribute to Hul Rebellion Heroes-JUNE 30

Hul Diwas is observed annually on June 30 to commemorate the historic 1855 Santhal Rebellion (or Santhal Hul) against British colonial rule and oppressive landlords.

Led by the brothers Sidho and Kanhu Murmu—along with Chand, Bhairav, Phulo, and Jhano—it marked a massive, indigenous uprising to protect jal, jangal, zameen (water, forest, and land).

On June 30, 1855, over 10,000 Santhals gathered in Bhognadih village (now in the Sahebganj district of Jharkhand) to declare a rebellion against exorbitant taxes and exploitation by moneylenders.

Taking place before the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny

Although ultimately suppressed by British forces, the sacrifice of these tribal martyrs led to the creation of the Santhal Parganas Tenancy Act in 1876, which secured land rights for the indigenous communities.
