1. Government to Replace Wholesale Price Index with Producer Price Index system

The Commerce and Industry Ministry has said that the government has approved the revision of the base year of the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) from 2011-12 to 2022-23.

Considering the wide usage of WPI in price escalation clauses, this index will be released for five years from the date of release of the revised series along with PPI and will be discontinued

Wholesale Price Index (WPI)What it measures: Tracks the average price of a fixed basket of goods at the initial stages of bulk, wholesale trade before retail.

Coverage: Historically limited to goods only, excluding services.

Producer Price Index (PPI)What it measures: Tracks the average change over time in prices received by domestic producers for their output.

It Includes both goods and services across the entire supply chain (from raw materials to final consumer products).

2. Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 Extended in Tamilnadu

The Jal Jeevan Scheme (Jal Jeevan Mission or JJM) in Tamil Nadu is a centrally sponsored initiative aimed at providing safe, adequate, and regular drinking water to every rural household through Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs).

Between 2019 and 2024, the mission successfully provided 46.71 lakh household tap connections across the state, benefiting approximately 1.86 crore people.

JJM 2.0 Extension: The extended phase will continue through December 2028, ensuring total coverage and the ongoing maintenance of water supply systems.

Tamil Nadu signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Union government on June 2, 2026, to extend the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) 2.0 until December 2028.

Under this extended phase, the state is set to receive an initial allocation of ₹2,177.27 crore to bolster rural drinking water supply.

3. Summer Air Pollution in Indian Cities

Delhi recorded 54 days of PM10 exceedance above the NAAQS limit between April and May 2026.

Summer pollution is increasingly driven by PM10 and ozone, unlike winter’s PM2.5-dominated smog.

PM2.5 primarily results from burning fossil fuels—such as diesel and coal in vehicles and power plants. Because they stay suspended longer, they can be carried thousands of kilometers by the wind.

PM10 generally results from mechanical breakdown, such as grinding, crushing, or dust kicked up by traffic on unpaved roads and construction sites.

Government Initiatives

1Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP): Implements graded pollution-control measures in NCR based on real-time air quality levels.

2Air Quality Early Warning System (AQEWS): Provides advanced forecasts of air quality and pollutant concentrations for timely action.

3National Clean Air Program (NCAP): Targets reducing particulate pollution in India’s non-attainment cities.

4Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM)

4. DRDO Successfully Conducted the Flight-test of RudraM-II

vRudraM-II is an advanced, high-speed, indigenously developed Air-to-Surface anti-radiation missile. It is designed to be launched from frontline fighter aircraft to detect, track, and neutralize enemy radar

DRDO and the Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully conducted flight-tests of the indigenous RudraM-II Air-to-Surface missile from an airborne platform at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur, Odisha.

RudraM-I: The baseline variant of the anti-radiation missile, already inducted into service, with a shorter range (100–150 km) and speed of Mach

RudraM-II: The upgraded variant with extended range, higher speed (Mach 5.5), and an Imaging Infrared (IIR) seeker for a wider variety of ground targets.

RudraM-III: Currently in development, this planned hypersonic variant aims to hit ranges beyond 550 km.
