The Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology (TNSDA) is conducting major excavations in the Tenkasi district across two highly significant ancient sites—Karivalamvanthanallur and Thirumalapuram—unearthing both a massive Sangam-era industrial hub and a sprawling Iron Age civilisation.
Karivalamvanthanallur Excavation
The site near Malaiyadipatti on the banks of the Vaippar river indicate that it was an active prehistoric and historic settlement that transitioned into an ancient industrial hub.
Sangam-Era Stepwell: Archaeologists discovered a 2,500-year-old square brick stepwell built over a paleochannel, featuring a staircase arrangement designed to access summer water.

Massive Brick Structure: A continuous residential or industrial building spanning 8.7 by 4.2 metres was unearthed using large uniform bricks.
Peacock Burial Urn: A rare red-slipped pot decorated with a series of painted peacocks on its shoulder was recovered alongside human molar and premolar teeth, verifying its use as a ritualistic funerary urn.
High-Tin Bronze: The site has yielded high-tin bronze objects, making it only the sixth site in all of Tamil Nadu to provide evidence of advanced metallurgical skill.
Thirumalapuram Excavation (Iron Age Megalithic Site)
Located near the Western Ghats, the 35-acre site at Thirumalapuram
Slab Chambers: Archaeologists dug 37 trenches and uncovered a unique rectangular burial chamber constructed out of 35 interlocking stone slabs and filled to a depth of 1.5 metres with cobblestones.
