Biodegradable waste at the Greater Chennai Corporation’s (GCC) waste disposal facilities has the potential to emit 28,870 tonnes of methane every year.

It accounts for 52% of the methane emitted in Tamil Nadu.

Study was undertaken by the Centre for Climate Change and Disaster Management (CCCDM), Anna University.

Methane is 25 times more potent green house effect than carbon dioxide.
