1. Groundwater Turns Yellow-Green Due to Chromium Pollution

Why in News?

Groundwater in parts of Fatehpur, Kanpur Dehat and Kanpur Nagar districts of Uttar Pradesh has been found contaminated with hexavalent chromium [Chromium (VI)], giving the water a fluorescent yellow-green colour.

Key Points

The contamination is linked to decades of industrial waste dumping, particularly from chromium-processing units and industries connected with leather tanning.

Chromium compounds have seeped through the soil and contaminated groundwater.

A 2025 government report found that 73%–96% of people tested in affected areas had chromium levels above permissible limits.

Exposure has been associated with skin irritation and gastrointestinal problems. Chromium (VI) is also classified as a carcinogen when inhaled.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the removal of chromium waste dumps and remediation of contaminated sites.

2. How AI Can Improve Healthcare

Why in News?

The increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare has brought attention to its potential in diagnosis, hospital management, remote monitoring and clinical decision-making.

Key Points

AI can help doctors prioritise radiology scans, identify deteriorating patients and improve clinical decision-making.

It can extend specialist support to smaller towns and underserved areas.

AI can also reduce administrative work involving appointments, documentation, claims and hospital management.

India already has a strong digital-health base through the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) and Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA).

AI systems must be supported by clinical validation, representative data, privacy safeguards and human oversight.

3. Delimitation and Federal Representation

Why in News?

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly has passed a resolution urging the Centre to retain the existing 543 Lok Sabha seats and the present State-wise distribution. It has also sought implementation of one-third reservation for women in the Lok Sabha from 2029 without linking it to future delimitation.

What is Delimitation?

Delimitation is the process of determining the number and boundaries of Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assembly constituencies.

The present State-wise distribution of Lok Sabha seats is largely based on the 1971 Census. Redistribution was frozen to prevent States that successfully controlled population growth from losing political representation.

Why is it Important?

Population growth has been uneven across India. States such as Tamil Nadu fear that a population-based redistribution could increase the representation of faster-growing States while reducing the relative political influence of States that achieved better population control.

This creates a debate between:

Democratic representation: One person, one vote, one value.

Federal balance: Protecting the political representation of States.

Important Constitutional Links

1Article 81 – Composition of the Lok Sabha.

2Article 82 – Readjustment of constituencies after every Census.

3Delimitation Commission – Responsible for redrawing constituency boundaries.

442nd Constitutional Amendment – Initially froze redistribution of Lok Sabha seats.

584th Constitutional Amendment – Extended the freeze until 2026.

6106th Constitutional Amendment – Provides one-third reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies, linked to a future delimitation exercise.

4. India–Bangladesh Relations

Why in News?

Bangladesh has said that a possible visit of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to India requires a favourable diplomatic environment. Dhaka has also sought the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other wanted persons.

India has invited Mr. Rahman for the upcoming BRICS Summit as well as for a bilateral visit.

Key Points

Bangladesh has stressed that bilateral ties should be based on sovereign equality, non-interference, national dignity and mutual benefit.

The extradition issue has emerged as an important factor in current bilateral relations.

Bangladesh remains strategically important to India because of its geographical location and connectivity with the Northeast.

Cooperation covers trade, connectivity, border management, security, energy and river-water sharing.

5. Mahadayi River Diversion

Why in News?

The Union government informed the Lok Sabha that no proposal seeking Environmental Clearance for diversion of the Mahadayi river is currently pending before the Environment Ministry.

The National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) has also not approved Karnataka's proposal to use 10.6852 hectares of forest land for the Kalasa Nala Diversion Scheme.

Why is the Project Important?

The proposed diversion is connected with Karnataka's water requirements, while Goa has raised environmental and water-security concerns.

Major concerns include:

Impact on Goa's drinking-water security

Possible saline-water intrusion

Impact on freshwater aquifers

Ecological consequences of river diversion

Possible impact on wildlife corridors

The proposed forest diversion lies in the tiger corridor between the Kali and Sahyadri Tiger Reserves.

The Centre has also stated that no proposal has been submitted for a Cumulative Impact Assessment or Carrying Capacity Study of the Mahadayi basin.
