INS Sharda, an offshore patrol vessel of the Indian Navy, has arrived at Maafilaafushi Atoll, Maldives, to participate in its first-ever Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) Exercise, scheduled from May 4 to May 10, 2025.

This initiative is part ofIndia’s broader strategic visionto fosterregional maritime cooperationand ensuredisaster preparednessin theIndian Ocean Region (IOR).

The deployment underscores India’s commitment to its"Neighbourhood First" Policy, wherein theMaldives holds a special strategic and cultural significanceas a close maritime neighbour.

The exercise aligns with the recently launched"MAHASAGAR" visionMutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions– announced by thePrime Ministerin Mauritius.

This vision reaffirmsIndia’s role as a net security providerandfirst responderin the Indian Ocean.

TheMAHASAGAR visionis an extension of India’s earlierSAGAR doctrine(Security and Growth for All in the Region), emphasisinginclusive security, regional collaboration, anddisaster resilience.

According to theIndian Navy, the key objectives of this HADR exercise include:

oEnhancing interoperabilitybetween theIndian Navyand theMaldives National Defence Force (MNDF).

oConductingjoint drillsforSearch and Rescue (SAR) operations,disaster response coordination,logistical support, andmedical assistance.

oFacilitatingtraining sessionsfor capacity building.

oEngaging with local communities forawareness and disaster resilience preparedness.
