Context
President Droupadi Murmwill preside over the Constitution Day (Samvidhan Divas) celebrations in the Central Hall of the old Parliament building. The event will also be attended by Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, as announced by the Lok Sabha Secretariat.
About Constitution Day
- Observed on: 26 November every year.
- Significance: Marks the adoption of the Constitution by the Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949.
- While some provisions (e.g., citizenship, elections, provisional Parliament) came into force immediately, the Constitution became fully operational on 26 January 1950, when India formally became a Republic.
Historical Background
- Prior to 2015, the day was observed as Law Day.
- In 2015, the Government of India notified “Constitution Day” to spread awareness about the Constitution and honour Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s role as Chairman of the Drafting Committee.
