Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and Bharat Taxi to introduce regulated and passenger-friendly cab services at Indian airports.
Objective of the Agreement: To introduce regulated, transparent, and passenger-friendly taxi services at several AAI airports, enhancing last-mile connectivity for air travellers.
Unique Model: Bharat Taxi operates on a driver-owned cooperative model, promoting fair fares with no surge pricing and prioritising driver welfare and ownership.
Service Rollout (Proposed): Bharat Taxi services are proposed to begin at airports including Rajkot, Vadodara, Surat, Bhuj, Pune, Aurangabad, Varanasi, Kanpur, Prayagraj, and Agra.
About the Airports Authority of India (AAI):
Established: 1995 under the Airports Authority of India Act, 1994.
Function: Develops, manages, and maintains civil aviation infrastructure at airports in India, including air traffic services and airport operations.
Role in Connectivity: Oversees policies and partnerships to improve last-mile connectivity as part of broader airport services and passenger facilitation mechanisms.
Last-Mile Connectivity in Airports:
Last-mile connectivity refers to the final leg of a passenger’s journey between the airport and their destination.
It is a crucial aspect of airport passenger experience, affecting comfort, safety, and convenience. Improved ground transportation options can enhance passenger satisfaction and reduce congestion.
Airport operators often regulate taxi services, bus services, shuttle vans, and ride-hailing options through designated zones and partnerships.
Cooperative Movement in India:
The cooperative model has roots in the Cooperative Societies Act and supports collective ownership and equitable economic participation of members.
Entities like NCDC, IFFCO, AMUL, KRIBHCO, NABARD are key cooperative institutions promoting agrarian, financial, and service cooperatives.
The use of cooperative principles in mobility (like Bharat Taxi) aligns with India’s broader efforts to empower small/independent operators and improve rural/urban economic inclusion.
Cab Services and Passenger Rights:
Regulated taxi services typically offer fixed fare charts, transparent billing, and designated pick-up/drop zones within airport premises.
Passenger-friendly services often include grievance redressal mechanisms, safety features (like SOS alerts), and driver identification.
Broader Urban Transport Strategy:
Improving last-mile connectivity at airports is part of India’s urban mobility planning, often integrated with public transport (metro, bus), taxi zones, and multi-modal transport hubs (MMTH).
It helps reduce private vehicle congestion, pollution, and enhances connectivity for travellers from tier-2 and tier-3 cities.
