Bharat Forge has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Andhra Pradesh to establish India’s first private-sector Marine Gas Turbine (MGT) repair, overhaul, and indigenous development facility at Visakhapatnam (Vizag). The project marks a major step toward strengthening India’s self-reliance in defence and marine propulsion technology.
Location and Strategic Importance:
The facility will be developed over nearly 80 acres within the Andhra Pradesh Defence Manufacturing Corridor at Visakhapatnam.
It will be strategically located near:
Naval Dockyard
INS Eksila
Eastern Naval Command Headquarters
The project aims to support the maintenance and indigenous development of marine gas turbines used in Indian naval warships.
The Marine Gas Turbine complex will focus on:
Repair and overhaul of marine gas turbines
Indigenous development and assembly of gas turbine systems
Reducing dependence on foreign countries for engine maintenance
Supporting the operational readiness of the Indian Navy
Developing India as a regional marine MRO hub
The project will be developed in two phases:
Phase I: Establishment of Marine Gas Turbine Repair & Overhaul (MRO) complex
Phase II: Development of India’s first private-sector Marine Gas Turbine Development and Assembly Hall
This initiative is important because:
India currently depends heavily on foreign suppliers for marine turbine maintenance.
It strengthens the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative in defence manufacturing.
It boosts indigenous naval propulsion capabilities.
It enhances defence industrial infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh.
It supports India’s maritime security and Indo-Pacific strategy.
