• In a bid to reduce the stress of Board exams, Class 10 students will be given the option of taking their exams twice from the academic year 2026-27, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) said on Wednesday.

• This option to improve performance in up to three academic subjects will only be provided to students who pass the first examination, officials said.

• The CBSE’s decision is in line with the 2020 National Education Policy (NEP) recommendation to remove the “high stakes” aspect of Board exams by allowing all students to attempt the exams up to two times during any given school year if they wish to.

One will be the main exam, and the other for improvement.

• “While it is mandatory for students to appear in the first Board examination which will be conducted in mid-February, all students who pass the first Board examination and are eligible will be allowed to improve their performance in any three subjects,” CBSE Chairman Rahul Singh said.

• “The second exam is purely optional and additional in nature,” he added. The better of the two scores will be considered in the final mark sheets of students who appear in both exams.

• Students can choose to sit for the improvement exam in one, two or a maximum of three subjects, after reviewing their scores in the first exam,” said Sanyam Bhardwaj, the CBSE’s Controller of Examinations
