Centre, Assam And Nagaland Sign Mou For Exploration And Production Of Crude Oil & Natural Gas

View June 2026 Crrent Affairs

The Central Government, along with the Governments of Assam and Nagaland, signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas in areas along the Assam–Nagaland border.

The MoU aims to facilitate hydrocarbon exploration, enhance energy security, attract investments, and promote economic development in the Northeast.

The agreement establishes a coordinated framework for:

Petroleum exploration and production

Safety and security of operations

Coordination among stakeholders

Encouraging investment in the upstream petroleum sector.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah described the agreement as an example of Cooperative Federalism and a step toward strengthening Atmanirbhar Bharat.

The MoU is expected to significantly increase oil extraction in the region, with some fields having recovery potential exceeding ₹15,000 crore.

The agreement is also expected to reduce India's dependence on imported energy and strengthen national energy security.

Why is this MoU Significant?

Revival of Hydrocarbon Exploration

Oil and gas exploration in parts of the Assam–Nagaland border region remained stalled for decades due to boundary-related issues.

The MoU provides a stable framework for resuming exploration and production activities.

Boost to Northeast Development

The agreement is expected to:

Generate employment opportunities

Increase state revenues

Improve infrastructure development

Attract public and private sector investments.

Strengthening Energy Security

Greater domestic production of oil and natural gas can reduce reliance on imports and contribute to India's long-term energy needs.

Additional Key Facts:

Hydrocarbon Vision 2030 for North-East India

Launched in 2016 by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas.

Aims to:

Increase oil and gas production in the Northeast.

Expand exploration acreage.

Develop gas pipeline infrastructure.

Promote investments and employment in the hydrocarbon sector.

Importance of Assam in India's Oil Sector

Oil exploration in India began at Digboi (Assam) in the 19th century.

Assam contributes about 12% of India's crude oil production and around 8.7% of natural gas production.
