View April 2026 Crrent Affairs

The Government of India has expanded the eligibility criteria of the Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS) to include final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students. This move aims to enhance participation and provide early industry exposure to students before completing their formal education.

Revised Eligibility Criteria

Under the revised norms, students in their final year of graduation or postgraduation, aged 18–25 years, are now eligible to apply for internships through the PMIS portal. Earlier, the scheme had stricter age and eligibility limits, which have now been relaxed to widen its reach.

Additionally, applicants must submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their educational institution to ensure that participation in the internship does not interfere with academic requirements.

Objectives of the Scheme

The expansion is aimed at:

Bridging the gap between academic learning and industry requirements

Enhancing employability and job-readiness of youth

Providing hands-on experience in real work environments

The initiative aligns with the goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes experiential learning and skill development.

Key Features of PM Internship Scheme

The PMIS provides paid internship opportunities in top companies across various sectors. Interns receive a monthly financial assistance of around ₹9,000, with most of the funding supported by the government.

The internship duration generally ranges from 6 months to 1 year, and at least part of the training is conducted in actual workplace settings, ensuring practical exposure.

Implementation and Administration

The scheme is implemented by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) in consultation with the Ministry of Education. Students can apply through an online portal, where opportunities are matched with candidates based on their qualifications and preferences.

Significance

The inclusion of final-year students is expected to:

Increase participation in the scheme

Facilitate a smooth transition from education to employment

Strengthen India’s goal of becoming a skill-driven economy

It also addresses concerns regarding low participation rates in earlier phases by making the scheme more inclusive.
