India and Cyprus have upgraded their bilateral ties to the level of a “Strategic Partnership” during talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides.
The two countries also decided to establish a joint task force to deepen cooperation in sectors such as: infrastructure, shipping, trade, investment and technology.
Key Outcomes of the Meeting
Both sides agreed to: strengthen economic cooperation, expand investments, improve connectivity and increase collaboration in innovation and strategic sectors.
India highlighted that:
investments from Cyprus into India have nearly doubled over the last decade and both countries aim to double investments again within the next five years.
Joint Task Force
A new joint task force will be created to promote cooperation mainly in: infrastructure development, maritime connectivity and shipping-related projects.
This move is expected to improve: business partnerships, logistics cooperation and economic engagement between the two countries.
Focus on Strategic Cooperation
India and Cyprus discussed cooperation in: defence, maritime security, digital technology, startups, innovation and counter-terrorism.
Both countries also supported:
stronger India–EU relations,
reforms in global institutions,
and peaceful resolution of international conflicts.
Why Cyprus is Important for India
Cyprus is strategically important because:
it is a member of the European Union (EU),
located in the Eastern Mediterranean region,
and acts as a gateway for Indian businesses entering European markets.
The partnership may also support: India–Europe trade connectivity, maritime cooperation and investment expansion.
