India and the Netherlands have expanded their strategic partnership with a strong focus on semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), research, innovation, and advanced technologies. The announcement was made during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Netherlands in May 2026. Both countries adopted the “India–Netherlands Strategic Partnership Roadmap 2026–2030” to deepen cooperation in technology, trade, talent development, and resilient supply chains.
Semiconductor Cooperation
Semiconductor technology emerged as the key area of cooperation between the two nations. India and the Netherlands agreed to strengthen trusted semiconductor supply chains, promote research collaboration, and support chip manufacturing initiatives. The partnership is expected to help India build a stronger domestic semiconductor ecosystem and reduce dependence on imports.
A major development under this cooperation is the partnership between Tata Electronics and ASML for India’s first semiconductor fabrication plant at Dholera. ASML, headquartered in the Netherlands, is globally known for its advanced Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography (EUV) technology used in semiconductor manufacturing.
Collaboration in Emerging Technologies
Apart from semiconductors, both countries will cooperate in several emerging technologies including Artificial Intelligence (AI), quantum technology, photonics, cybersecurity, and digital innovation. The partnership also focuses on research collaboration between universities and institutions, along with skill development and talent exchange programmes.
Importance for India
The partnership supports India’s efforts toward technological self-reliance under initiatives such as Make in India, Digital India, and the India Semiconductor Mission launched in 2021 under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). Semiconductors are crucial components used in smartphones, computers, defence systems, telecommunications, electric vehicles, and AI-based technologies.
India–Netherlands Relations
The Netherlands is one of India’s important trading partners in Europe. Both countries cooperate in sectors such as agriculture, water management, renewable energy, ports, shipping, and technology. The Joint Trade and Investment Committee (JTIC) acts as an important institutional mechanism for strengthening bilateral trade and investment relations.
