Background & Context
The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) has relaxed norms for deep-tech startups. Previously, startups needed to be in existence for 3 years to get DSIR recognition; this requirement has now been scrapped.
Why This Matters for Startups
- Deep-Tech Definition: Technologies based on scientific discovery or meaningful engineering innovation (AI, Quantum Computing, Biotech).
- Benefits of DSIR Recognition: Startups can now access customs duty exemptions, R&D grants, and the INR 1 lakh crore RDI Fund much earlier in their lifecycle.
- Strategic Goal: Moving from Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-reliant) to a stage where the world relies on Indian tech ("Global Reliability").
