Why is in news? Russia’s Moon mission fails after Luna-25 crashes into moon
Russia’s space agency Roscosmos, which launched the Luna-25, has said that its landing on the moon would not impede India’s Chandrayaan-3, which was launched on July 14, 2023, as the two missions had different landing areas and there was enough space on the moon for everyone.
Luna-25 was launched from Russia’s Vostochny spaceport in the country’s fareast region.
Its lunar lander is expected to reach the moon on August 23, the same day on which Chandrayaan-3 is also expected to land on the lunar surface.
The mission ended in failure after its spacecraft, Luna-25 spun out of control and crashed into the moon.
The Russian space agency Roscosmos said, that a preliminary analysis of Luna 25 mission suggests that a deviation between the actual and calculated parameters of the propulsion manoeuvre led to the spacecraft transitioning into an unintended orbit, resulting in its collision with the lunar surface and subsequent loss.
About the mission:
Luna 25 is a lunar lander mission by Roscosmos.
It will land near the lunar south pole at the crater Boguslawsky.
Initially called Luna-Glob lander, it was renamed to Luna 25 to emphasize the continuity of the Soviet Luna programme from the 1970s, though it is still part of what was at one point conceptualized as the Luna-Glob lunar exploration program.
It is the first lunar probe that the Russian space agency Roscosmos has sent to the moon (notwithstanding the ones sent by the Soviets) and could be the first probe to land on the lunar South Pole.
