Why is in news? PM greets Sikh community on the commencement of Nanakshahi Sammat 555
The Prime Minister has greeted Sikh community around the world on the commencement of Nanakshahi Sammat 555.
Nanakshahi Sammat 555 is a calendar system that was introduced by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) in 2003 to mark the 500th anniversary of the birth of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism.
The Nanakshahi calendar is based on the tropical solar year and begins on April 14, which is celebrated as the Sikh New Year, and runs for 365 days.
The calendar has twelve months, each consisting of thirty days, with an additional five or six days added to the end of the year to make up for the discrepancy between the solar and lunar years.
The Nanakshahi calendar is used by Sikhs around the world to mark important dates and festivals in the Sikh calendar, including the birth anniversaries of the ten Sikh Gurus, the martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev, and the anniversary of the founding of the Khalsa Panth.
