A newfruit fly species,Euphranta undulata,was recently discovered in theRi-Bhoi districtofMeghalaya.
Etymology:The name,undulata, derives from the Latin word for “wavy,” referring to thewavy marginof thefemaleaculeus tip(the pointed part of the egg-laying ovipositor).
Physical Traits:It is a slender-bodied insect with a brown or grey abdomen and patternedhyaline(transparent)wings.
Ecological Niche:Native to thebamboo ecosystemof Northeast India, it isfrugivorous(fruit-eating) andmonophagous(feeding on a single type of food).
