Why is in news? Office of Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks (CGPDTM) initiates open house dialogue for IP Fraternity under the directions of the Commerce Minister

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and Textiles, addressing in the Valedictory Session of National Intellectual Property Conference 2022 on 'Strengthening IP Ecosystem for catalysing the growth of Knowledge Economy' on 15 Oct 2022 at New Delhi.

He expressed his desire to have open house dialogue with the IP Fraternity by the office of Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks (CGPDTM) and address their concerns, grievances and facilitate the discussion on the changes required into the IP Ecosystem.

The Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks (CGPDTM) generally known as the Indian Patent Office.

It is an agency under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade which administers the Indian law of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks.

After Independence, it was felt that the Indian Patents & Designs Act, 1911 was not fulfilling its objective.

In 1972, Patent Act, 972 was introduced. However, the 1911 Act continued to be applicable to designs.

The CGPDTM reports to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and has five main administrative sections namely, Patent Office, Designs Registry, Trademarks Registry, Geographical indications Registry, Patent Information System

The patent office is headquartered at Kolkata with branches in Chennai, New Delhi and Mumbai, but the office of the CGPDTM is in Mumbai.

The office of the Patent Information System and National Institute for Intellectual Property Management is at Nagpur.

The Controller General (CG), who supervises the administration of the Patents Act, the Designs Act, and the Trade Marks Act, also advises the Government on matters relating to these subjects.

Under the office of CGPDTM, a Geographical Indications Registry has been established in Chennai to administer the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.
