Why is in news? PM congratulates entire team of 'Naatu Naatu' for winning Oscar award

The Prime Minister has congratulated Indian Musical Composer, M.M Keeravani, Lyricist, Chandrabose and entire team for winning Oscar award for 'Naatu Naatu' song from RRR movie for Best Original Song in the 95th Academy Awards were held at the Dolby Theatre of Hollywood at Los Angels.

Also he congratulated documentary film maker, Kartiki Gonsalves, film producer, Guneet Monga and the entire team of ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ for winning Oscar for Best Documentary Short Film.

The Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars, are awards for artistic and technical merit for the global film industry.

The awards are regarded by many as the most prestigious, significant awards in the entertainment industry in the United States.

It is given annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the awards are a recognition of excellence in cinematic achievements of primarily American films, as assessed by the Academy's voting membership.

The various category winners are awarded a copy of a golden statuette as a trophy, officially called the "Academy Award of Merit", although more commonly referred to by its nickname, the "Oscar”.

The first Academy Awards presentation was held on May 16, 1929.

Bhanu Athaiya became the first Indian to win an Academy Award for designing the costumes for the film Gandhi in 1983.

In 1992, legendary Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray was bestowed with an Honorary Academy Award, becoming the only Indian to date to receive the honour.

Resul Pookutty and A. R. Rahman won the Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing and Best Original Score respectively for the 2008 British film Slumdog Millionaire
