Why is in news? Prime Minister pays tributes to Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay on his birth anniversary

Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya was born in 1916 in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. His father’s name was Bhagwati Prasad, an astrologer, and his mother Rampyari was a religious woman.

Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya was an Indian politician and most important leader of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh.

He was also the forerunner of the present-day Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Upadhyaya started the monthly publication Rashtra Dharma, broadly meaning 'National Duty', in the 1940s to spread the ideals of Hindutva revival.

Later he started the weekly Panchjanya and the daily Swadesh.

In Hindi, he wrote a drama on Chandragupta Maurya, and later wrote a biography of Shankaracharya. He translated a Marathi biography of Hedgewar.

Upadhyaya is known for drafting Jan Sangh's official political doctrine, Integral humanism, by including some cultural-nationalism values and his agreement with several Gandhian socialist principles such as sarvodaya (progress of all) and swadeshi (self-sufficiency).

His principle of "integral humanism" is defined as "a classless, casteless and conflict-free social order". It talks about the integration of indigenous "Indian culture" with the social, political and economic fabric of the nation. It provides for a holistic idea of human welfare.

He visualised for India a decentralised polity and self-reliant economy with the village as the base. He spoke against caste polarisation and identity-based voting.

He strongly argued against the left-right division as being detrimental to the growth of a constructive, transformative pro-people ideology. He strongly believed that politics must be controlled by the masses, and not the wealthy.
