India set to join Tropical Forests Forever Facility (TFFF) as Observer
About TFFF:
Tropical Forests Forever Facility (TFFF) is a global blended-finance initiative proposed by Brazil to reward countries for preserving tropical forests.
It was announced ahead of COP30 (to be hosted in Belém, Brazil, 2025)
Objective
oTo provide long-term, predictable funding for conservation of tropical forests.
oFocuses on valuing ecosystem services like carbon storage, biodiversity, and water regulation.
Eligible countries: Tropical-forest nations (with significant moist broadleaf forests).
Funding Mechanism
oSeeks to mobilize about USD 125 billion through public and private sources.
oOperates as a permanent endowment fund — investments generate returns, and the returns (not capital) are paid to forest nations for keeping forests intact.
oPayments are made per hectare of standing forest; deductions occur for deforestation or degradation.
oAt least 20% of payments go to Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs).
