2. Odisha Selected for PM Surya Ghar Excellence Awards

Odisha was selected for the PM Surya Ghar Excellence Awards for its performance during the Month of Solar campaign held in May 2026.

The state ranked first among states with a medium number of consumers in three categories: highest number of applications, highest solar installations, and highest DISCOM inspections.

PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana

PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a central government scheme for rooftop solar power generation in India. The scheme aims to expand household-level solar adoption through installation-linked support and consumer participation.

Subsidy: Through Central Financial Assistance (CFA), a subsidy of up to 40% of the installation cost is provided.

3. 100 Years of solar data traces new clues on how the Sun’s surface tracks

The Kodaikanal solar observatory, known for the oldest continuous series of solar data collected in India, have helped uncover how giant convection patterns on the Sun respond to solar activity, providing insights for future solar cycle prediction.

Much like a boiling pot of water on a stove, the energy generated within the Sun is transported through its outer layers via convection.

Convective cells lead to the formation of small-scale granulations and large scale supergranulations as a network structure on the solar surface.

The network cells have an average lifetime of 24 hr, and a size of about 30,000 km., The width of the cooler intergranular lanes is about 6000 km

The study highlights the importance of understanding these correlations for predicting solar activity and its effects on solar irradiance variations, particularly in the UV spectrum

The analysis confirms that while no single latitude follows the solar cycle exactly, significant correlations exist at specific latitudes for different quantities.

4. Panchayat Advancement Index Wins Gold Recognition

The Panchayat Advancement Index (PAI), a flagship data-driven governance initiative of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, has been selected for the Gold Award at the National Awards for e-Governance 2026 under Category VII – Digital Transformation through the Use of Data Analytics in Digital Platforms

The Gold Award comprises a trophy, a citation, and a cash incentive of ₹10 lakh for further strengthening the initiative and advancing public welfare outcomes.

The award will be presented during the 29th National Conference on e-Governance, which will be held on 1–2 July 2026 in Jaipur, Rajasthan.

The Conference is being jointly organised by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY)

The theme of this year’s Conference, “Viksit Bharat 2047: AI-Enabled, Data-Driven and Secure Digital Governance,”

The Panchayat Advancement Index (PAI) is India’s first comprehensive, data-driven framework for assessing and ranking the performance of Gram Panchayats across the nine themes of the Localisation of Sustainable Development Goals (LSDGs).

PAI 2.0, the latest and significantly strengthened version of the Index, assesses more than 2.6 lakh Gram Panchayats against 150 indicators and 230 data points. Based on their composite scores, Gram Panchayats are classified into five performance categories
