Lignite production in India in 2022-23

The overall production of lignite declined by 5.27% at All India level

Tamil Nadu accounted for 49.97% of the production.

Gujarat at 27.37%, and Rajasthan at 22.67%.

Other Information:

Lignite deposits are found at tertiary sediments.

Major Lignite Regions:

southern and western parts of the peninsular shield

Tamil Nadu, Pudhucherry, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Jammu & Kashmir

Minor quantities in Odisha, Kerala and West Bengal

Tamil Nadu accounts for about 82% of India’s lignite reserves of 40.9 billion tonnes
