Offshore Potential: Tamil Nadu's coastline holds tremendous future potential, estimated at over 35 GW of offshore wind capacity.
2Panama pitches its maritime network to Tamil Nadu businesses
The Event: A business meet titled ‘The Panama Advantage – Maritime & Pharma Gateway to Latin America’ was held in Chennai.
Key Personality: Alonso Correa Miguel, Ambassador of Panama to India.
Target Sectors: Panama is specifically targeting Tamil Nadu's Maritime and Pharmaceutical sectors, alongside its booming electronics and automobile manufacturing industries.
The Objective: To position Panama as a single logistical base for Tamil Nadu manufacturers to access 20 Latin American markets without import taxes (leveraging Panama's 23 trade agreements).
Tamil Nadu’s Economic Profile
Export Powerhouse: Tamil Nadu exported goods worth $59 billion in 2025–26.
Sectoral Dominance: The state accounts for one-third or more of India’s total electronics and vehicle exports.
Economic Scale: Tamil Nadu’s economy is approximately four times the size of Panama’s, highlighting TN's manufacturing might seeking global logistical hubs.
Mains Linkage: To achieve Tamil Nadu's ambitious goal of becoming a $1 Trillion economy, diversifying export destinations beyond traditional Western markets into Latin America (using hubs like Panama) is a critical strategic step.
Geographical & Logistical Significance of Panama
Strategic Location: Panama acts as a natural land bridge between North and South America, and a maritime link between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea / Atlantic Ocean.
The Panama Canal: A crucial maritime choke point that handles 2.3% of global trade, connecting 1,920 ports worldwide.
Colón Free Zone: Mentioned as a key asset, it is one of the largest free trade zones in the world, allowing TN businesses to set up tenants and utilize a dollarized economy for easier trade.
Maritime Assets: Panama hosts 5 of Latin America’s top 10 ports (e.g., Manzanillo and Balboa) and has one of the world's largest open ship registries (flags of convenience), which can generate employment for Tamil Nadu's skilled seafarers.
3A heroic salute to the Marudu brothers: Chief Minister Vijay
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay paid tributes to the Marudhu Brothers on their memorial day (October 24). He honored their unparalleled bravery, their sacrifice for the motherland, and their rule over the Sivaganga region. He specifically highlighted their historic 'Jambu Theevu Proclamation' (Jambu Dweepa Declaration), an early call to unite Indians against British imperialism long before the First War of Indian Independence (1857).
The Marudhu Brothers
Who were they? Periya Marudhu (Vella Marudhu) and Chinna Marudhu were the able generals of Muthuvaduganatha Thevar of Sivaganga. After his death in the Kalaiyar Kovil battle, they played a pivotal role in helping Queen Velu Nachiyar reclaim her throne.
The South Indian Rebellion (1800–1801): Chinna Marudhu was the brain behind the South Indian Rebellion against the British East India Company. He organized a confederacy of anti-British forces, including Oomaithurai (brother of Veerapandiya Kattabomman), Kerala Varma, and Krishnappa Nayak of Mysore.
Tiruchirappalli Proclamation / Jambu Dweepa Declaration (June 1801):
oIssued by Chinna Marudhu, it was the first call to the Indians to unite against the British, cutting across caste, creed, and regional boundaries.
oCopies of this proclamation were pasted on the walls of the Nawab’s palace in Trichy and the Srirangam temple.
Martyrdom (October 24, 1801): The British defeated the rebel forces and captured the Marudhu brothers. They were hanged at the Tiruppathur Fort in Sivaganga district on October 24, 1801. This date is observed annually as their memorial day.
4Tamil Nadu government signs contract to procure 6.246 million cakes for Children's Day
The Tamil Nadu Government has finalized contracts to procure and distribute 62.46 lakh (6.2 million) cakes to government school students across the state on the occasion of Children’s Day (November 14).
Target Beneficiaries: Over 62.46 lakh students studying in Tamil Nadu Government schools.
Nodal Agency: The procurement is being managed by the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation (TNCSC).
Contract Value & Partners: The total contract value is approximately ₹7.34 Crores (₹7,34,11,565). The government has tied up with four major food corporations: Britannia, ITC, Dream Bake, and Elite Natural.
Quality Assurance: Strict quality control protocols are in place. The State Food Safety Department will inspect the cakes for manufacturing/expiry dates, FSSAI licensing, and overall quality at the godowns before they are dispatched to schools between November 9 and 11.
Role of TNCSC While the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation (TNCSC) is primarily known for managing the Public Distribution System (PDS) and procuring paddy, this news highlights its broader administrative role in executing large-scale, time-sensitive state welfare and festive distribution schemes.
Child Welfare & Education Administration: This initiative reflects Tamil Nadu's extensive logistical capacity to reach millions of students uniformly. It complements the state's broader educational welfare models, such as the Mid-Day Meal Scheme and the Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme, focusing on student well-being and school engagement.
Food Safety (Public Health): The mandatory involvement of Food Safety officials before dispatch highlights the state's governance protocols regarding public health and child safety.
5Reduction in VAT on aviation fuel: Tamil Nadu government announces
The Tamil Nadu Government has announced a significant reduction in the Value Added Tax (VAT) levied on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) to boost domestic air travel and regional connectivity.
Key Highlights of the Government Order:
Chennai International Airport: VAT on aviation fuel sold to scheduled airlines has been reduced from 29% to 16%.
Other Airports in Tamil Nadu: For all other airports in the state (such as Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy, Salem, and Thoothukudi), the VAT has been drastically slashed from 29% to just 1%.
Validity: This tax concession is valid for one year, from November 1, 2026, to October 31, 2027.
Conditions: To avail of this benefit, fuel companies must submit a signed declaration from the purchasing airline confirming that the fuel is strictly for domestic flight operations.
Taxation Concepts : It is a crucial exam fact that Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) is currently outside the purview of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in India. Alongside alcohol for human consumption, petroleum crude, motor spirit (petrol), high-speed diesel, and natural gas, ATF is one of the items where State Governments still retain the power to levy VAT.
Regional Connectivity : The massive reduction to 1% for non-Chennai airports is a strategic move to boost Tier-2 and Tier-3 city airport operations. Lower fuel costs encourage airlines to increase flight frequencies to these cities, directly complementing the Union Government's UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) scheme aimed at enhancing regional connectivity.
Economic Impact: Aviation fuel accounts for nearly 40% of an airline's operational cost. By reducing this burden, Tamil Nadu aims to attract more domestic airline traffic, which in turn stimulates tourism, trade, and industrial growth in southern and western districts.
