Context: For the first time, a dedicated animal contingent of the Indian Army, featuring the double-humped Bactrian camel, will participate in the 77th Republic Day parade (2026).
Species Profile:
Habitat: Primarily found in the Hunder area of the Nubra Valley, Ladakh.
Capabilities: Adapted to extreme high-altitude cold deserts (above 15,000 ft) and temperatures as low as $-40^\circ\text{C}$.
Military Role: They can carry loads up to 250 kg, far exceeding the 40-60 kg capacity of local ponies. They are used for logistical support and patrolling along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
Significance: Their debut highlights India's unique high-altitude defense capabilities and the integration of indigenous fauna into modern military logistics.
