Why is in news? PM pays homage to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar on Mahaparinirvan Diwas

Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, popularly known as Babasaheb Ambedkar, was one of the main architects of the Indian Constitution.

He was a very well known political leader, philosopher, writer, economist, scholar and a social reformer who dedicated his life to eradicating untouchability and other social inequality in India.

He was independent India's first Minister of Law and Justice.

He was born on 14 April 1891 in Madhya Pradesh in Hindu Mahar Caste.

He had to face severe discriminations from every corner of the society as the Mahar caste was viewed as "untouchable" by the upper class.

As chairman of the Constitution’s drafting committee, he took meticulous measures to build a just society through liberty, equality and fraternity.

He established the Bahishkrit Hitakarini Sabha to promote education and socio-economic improvement of the untouchables.

He also founded the Independent Labor Party (1936) and Scheduled Castes Federation (1942).

He led the Mahad Satyagrah or Chavdar Tale Satyagraha to fight for the right of the untouchable community to draw water from the main water tank of the town.

In 1930, Ambedkar launched Kalaram Temple movement.

In 1932 he signed Poona pact.

He resigned from cabinet in 1951, when parliament stalled his draft of the Hindu Code Bill. The bill sought to enshrine gender equality in the laws of inheritance and marriage.

He said Article 32 is "soul of the Constitution and very heart of it".

On October 14, 1956 he embraced Buddhism along with many of his followers. The same year he completed his last writing 'Buddha and His Dharma'.

He was died on December 6, 1956. In 1990, Dr.B.R.Ambedkar, was bestowed with Bharat Ratna.

The period from 14th April 1990 - 14th April 1991 was observed as 'Year of Social Justice' in the memory of Babasaheb.
