India Moves Towards Seamless Highways: Barrier-free Tolling System Introduced

India has launched its first barrier-free tolling system based on Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) technology on NH-48 (Surat–Bharuch stretch) in Gujarat.

About the MLFF Tolling System

The newly introduced system marks a transition from traditional toll plazas to a fully digital and automated toll collection mechanism.

Implemented at Chorayasi Toll Plaza (Gujarat)

Eliminates physical barriers and stoppages at toll booths

Vehicles can pass at normal highway speeds without stopping

Key Technologies Used:

The system integrates advanced digital technologies:

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras

FASTag-based electronic toll collection

AI-enabled vehicle identification and data processing

Toll is automatically deducted while the vehicle is in motion.

Objectives of the Initiative:

Reduce traffic congestion at toll plazas

Ensure seamless and faster travel

Improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions

Promote digital infrastructure and automation in highways

Future Roadmap:

Government plans to expand MLFF system to multiple toll plazas across India

Aims to create a nationwide barrier-free tolling ecosystem by replacing conventional toll booths
