Why is in news? 1 lakh 29 thousand trained under Pravasi Kaushal Vikas Yojana to equip people with soft skills to compete in foreign destinations

The National Skill Development Corporation, under the aegis of Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) in association with Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), is imparting a one-day Pre-Departure Orientation Training (PDOT) to potential migrants under the Pravasi Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PKVY) scheme.

The training aims to equip them with the necessary soft skills to compete in foreign destinations.

The orientation covers various aspects, including language, culture, emigration process, welfare measures, and do’s and don’ts of the destination country. Upon completing 8 hours of training, candidate receive a certificate

As of 31st May 2023 a total of 1,29,062 candidates have received training under PDOT, PKVY, since January 2018.

The Ministry does not maintain the data on the number of PDO trained persons who got jobs in various countries.

Highlights of scheme:

The Pravasi Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PKVY) is aimed at skilling Indians seeking employment abroad.

The programme is also aimed at boosting the confidence of the Indian youth so that they don't feel like strangers when they land in a country of their choice for vocation.

PKVY will train and certify Indians, who are keen on overseas employment in select sectors, in line with international standards.

It will be implemented by the National Skill Development Corporation through its training partners and in consultation with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Skill Development Ministry.

The scheme will provide the requisite skills and certification to youth looking for overseas job opportunities across various sectors, as per global standards.

This is being done to prevent their exploitation at the hands of their foreign employer, due to a lack of relevant skills.

Ministry of External Affairs would provide for Pre-Departure Orientation Training (PDOT), which means providing knowledge of the local culture, language, work ethics and other soft skills relevant to the country in which they obtain a job.

In the long run, due to ageing population, many countries will face a shortage of skilled labour. Skilling the growing Indian workforce will make them employable in these countries.

These efforts are slated to enhance overseas employment opportunities for Indian workers, boost the Skill India Mission and is an important step in realizing the PM's vision of transforming India into the skill capital' or the human resource capital' of the world.
