Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS) and a new section of the Meerut Metro in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, marking the first time that a rapid rail service and metro service were launched together from a single platform in India.

Key Points of the Launch

The RRTS and Meerut Metro services were launched simultaneously, enhancing connectivity in the National Capital Region (NCR), particularly between Meerut and Delhi.

The integrated system will support intra-city metro travel and inter-city rapid transit using Namo Bharat trains, greatly improving daily commuting for workers, students, and residents.

The Prime Minister highlighted the project as a step towards ‘Viksit Uttar Pradesh’ and ‘Viksit Bharat’, reflecting modern infrastructure development.

The inauguration also symbolised increased women's participation in the workforce, as many train operators and station staff were women.

The projects are expected to generate employment opportunities and attract industries to the region, boosting economic growth.

The Prime Minister underlined the government’s focus on completing infrastructure projects efficiently, once laid with foundation stones.

About RRTS:

Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS) is a high-speed regional transport system designed to connect cities and suburbs seamlessly at speeds of up to 180 km/h, significantly cutting travel time compared to conventional rail or road transport.

The Delhi–Meerut RRTS corridor is one of the first of its kind in India, aimed at improving connectivity in the NCR, which includes Delhi, parts of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh

About Metro Rail Projects in India:

India has one of the largest urban metro networks in the world, with metro systems operational in cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune, Kochi, Lucknow, and Ahmedabad.

Metro rail projects are critical for reducing road congestion, lowering pollution, and improving urban mobility.

Significance for Regional Development:

Improved public transport systems like RRTS and metro corridors enhance economic integration between smaller cities and major urban hubs.

Such projects support the government’s Infrastructure for Growth agenda by promoting connectivity, employment, and accessibility across regions.
