Why is in news? Defence Minister Rajnath Singh says, govt aims to make India an indigenous shipbuilding hub
The Defence Minister was speaking after commissioning INS Mormugao, a P15B stealth-guided missile destroyer, into the Indian Navy in Mumbai.
He said, INS Mormugao is one of the most capable ships of the Indian Navy and its commissioning is an example of India's warship design and developmental excellence.
The Armed Forces for protecting the borders and coasts with unmatched courage and dedication, terming them as the backbone of India’s unprecedented growth.
It is the Government’s top priority to continue strengthening the security infrastructure by equipping the military with state-of-the-art indigenous weapons and equipment.
Project – 15B:
Four Guided missile Destroyers of Project 15B (P 15B) are under construction at M/s Mazagaon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, Mumbai. These ships are amongst the most technologically advanced Guided Missile Destroyers of the world, with state-of-the-art weapon/sensor package, advanced stealth features and a high degree of automation.
4 Destroyers include INS Visakhapatnam (Commissioned in 2021), INS Mormugao (Commissioned in 2022), INS Imphal, INS Surat.
Project 75:
Project 75 of the Indian Navy is a scheme of the Government of India that envisioned building six Scorpene class attack submarines, a group of diesel-electric impulsion submarines at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai.
The transfer of technology contracts with France in 2005 allowed India to use indigenous resources while getting assistance from French technology.
Six attack submarines: INS Kalvari (commissioned in 2017), INS Khanderi (commissioned in 2019), INS Karanj (inducted in 2021), INS Vela (commissioned in 2021), INS Vagir (under process) and INS Vagsheer.
