Background & Context
The West Bengal government has laid the foundation for the 5-km-long bridge over the Muriganga River, connecting Sagar Island to the mainland (Lot 8 in Kakdwip).
Project Details
- Name: Gangasagar Setu.
- Connectivity: Currently, the island is accessible only via ferry, which is dangerous during high tides and fog, especially during the Gangasagar Mela (the world’s second-largest human congregation after Kumbh).
- Strategic & Religious Importance: Sagar Island is where the Ganga meets the Bay of Bengal. The bridge will provide all-weather access to the Kapil Muni Temple and boost the economy of the Sundarbans region.
