Recently Uttarakhand celebrated its 25th foundation day on November 9, 2025.

Formation: Uttarakhand was formed on 9 November 2000 by joining several districts from the Northwestern part of Uttar Pradesh and a portion of the Himalayan Mountain range.

Act: Uttar Pradesh Reorganization Act, 2000

Capital: Dehradun

Division: The state is divided into Garhwal and Kumoan divisions.

Bordering states: Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.

International borders with China (Tibet Autonomous Region) in the north and Nepal in the east.

Border Disputes:

oIndia–China: The Barahoti region in Chamoli district is a disputed area claimed by both India and China.

oIndia–Nepal: The Kalapani–Limpiyadhura–Lipulekh tri-junction dispute continues between India and Nepal regarding the origin of River Kali.

Major Rivers: The state is the origin of many Himalayan rivers, including the Ganga (from Gangotri Glacier as Bhagirathi), Yamuna (from Yamunotri Glacier), and Alaknanda.

The four most sacred and revered Hindtemples of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri also known as Char-dams are situated in Uttarakhand and so, are known as the ‘Land of the Gods.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Valley of Flowers and Nanda Devi National Park.

In 2007, officially, it was renamed Uttarakhand from Uttaranchal.
