India Becomes The World’s Third Largest Renewable Energy Producer

View May 2026 Crrent Affairs

India has secured the third position globally in installed renewable energy capacity, according to the Renewable Energy Statistics 2026 released by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). India surpassed Brazil and now ranks behind only China and the United States in renewable energy capacity.

Major Milestone in India’s Clean Energy Transition

India has achieved a significant milestone in the renewable energy sector with non-fossil fuel sources accounting for more than 50% of the country’s total installed electricity capacity. This target was originally planned for 2030 under India’s commitments made during the Paris Agreement, but the country achieved it nearly five years ahead of schedule.

Current Renewable Energy Status in India

As of March 2026, India’s renewable energy and non-fossil fuel capacity stood at record levels:

Total Renewable Energy Capacity: 274.68 GW

Total Non-Fossil Fuel Capacity: 283.46 GW

Solar Energy Capacity: 150.26 GW

Wind Energy Capacity: 56.09 GW

Large Hydro Power Capacity: 51.41 GW

Bio-Energy Capacity: 11.75 GW

Small Hydro Power Capacity: 5.17 GW

Nuclear Power Capacity: 8.78 GW

Key Factors Behind India’s Rapid Growth

The expansion of renewable energy in India has been supported by several government initiatives and policy reforms, including:

Development of large-scale solar parks

Promotion of rooftop solar installations

Expansion of wind energy infrastructure

Green Energy Corridor Project

Financial incentives and policy support for renewable energy

Promotion of domestic manufacturing under clean energy schemes

Challenges in the Renewable Energy Sector

Despite rapid growth, India still faces several challenges in the renewable energy sector:

Dependence on imports for solar modules and key components

Heavy reliance on Chinese supply chains for renewable energy equipment

Need for stronger grid infrastructure and storage facilities

Requirement of large-scale investments to achieve the 2030 target of 500 GW non-fossil capacity
