View May 2026 Crrent Affairs

India successfully carried out the flight trial of an advanced Agni missile equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) capability from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha. The test marked a major milestone in strengthening India’s strategic defence and missile capabilities.

Key Features of the Missile Test

The missile was tested with multiple payloads aimed at different targets spread across a large geographical area in the Indian Ocean Region.

The successful trial demonstrated India’s capability to strike multiple strategic targets using a single missile system.

The test involved advanced telemetry and tracking systems through both ground-based and ship-based stations.

Flight data confirmed that all mission objectives were achieved successfully.

What is MIRV Technology?

Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV)

MIRV technology enables a single ballistic missile to carry multiple warheads, each capable of hitting different targets independently.

Importance of MIRV Capability

Enhances strategic deterrence capability

Allows simultaneous targeting of multiple locations

Improves missile effectiveness against missile defence systems

Reduces the number of missiles required during strategic operations

Significance for India’s Strategic Defence

The successful test places India among a select group of countries possessing advanced MIRV-enabled missile systems. The development significantly strengthens India’s nuclear deterrence and strategic strike capability.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Indian Army, and industry partners involved in the mission and stated that the test would greatly enhance India’s defence preparedness against emerging security challenges.

Role of DRDO in Missile Development

The missile was developed by laboratories under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) with support from Indian defence industries. Senior scientists from DRDO and personnel of the Indian Army monitored the trial.
