View November 2025 Crrent Affairs

The Centre will soon release a national policy on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), Minister for Civil Aviation said.

About:

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a biofuel used to power aircraft that has lower carbon emissions compared to conventional jet fuel (ATF – Aviation Turbine Fuel).

It can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional jet fuels, depending on the feedstock and production pathway.

Policy Framework and Support:

oSAF aligns with National Policy on Biofuels (2018, amended 2022) and India’s Net Zero 2070 target.

oIncentives and research support are being discussed to scale up domestic SAF production.

oThe government aims for 1% SAF blending by 2027, increasing gradually thereafter.

Significance:

oCritical for decarbonizing aviation, which accounts for around 2–3% of global CO₂ emissions.

oSupports India’s goals under the Paris Agreement and promotes the circular bioeconomy.
