Context: The Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW) recently notified operational guidelines for these schemes to make India a global shipbuilding hub by 2047.
- Background: India currently has a negligible share (less than 1%) in global shipbuilding, dominated by China, South Korea, and Japan. To fix this, the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 aims to place India in the Top 5 shipbuilding nations.
- Key Features of the Schemes:
- Financial Assistance (SBFAS): Provides 15% to 25% financial support for specialized vessels. It has a corpus of ₹24,736 crore.
- Infrastructure Support (SbDS): Aims at creating Greenfield Shipbuilding Clusters (100% support via Centre-State SPV) and Brownfield expansion (25% assistance for existing yards).
- Shipbreaking Credit Note: Introduces a "Circular Economy" where ship owners get a credit (40% of scrap value) for recycling ships in India to buy new Indian-made vessels.
